Movement Competence Posters

The Movement Competence Posters may be used by students to develop their physical literacy skills related to fundamental and transferable movement skills, concepts and strategies.

This resource aligns with The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9-12, Health and Physical Education (2015), which includes 10 posters:

  • Five posters support the development of stability, locomotion and manipulation skills.
  • Four posters support the development of game/sport strategies using the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) approach to developing physical literacy skills. Each game/sport poster includes offensive and defensive strategies common to the game category, connections to Living Skills and tactical awareness questions for students to consider in order to improve their performance.
  • One poster focuses on skills, concepts, principles and strategies that are transferable to a variety of individual pursuits.

These posters are written using student voice in the form of “I can” success criteria, which can be used with students to co-construct success criteria or, to extend the co-constructed criteria with students at the beginning of a unit of learning. The posters may also be used throughout the unit for teacher, peer and student self-assessment and feedback, and for establishing the success criteria for a final performance task.

The information contained in these posters is not meant to be a complete list of success criteria for movement skills, concepts, principles and strategies. It is meant to serve as an example to support teachers with effective assessment practice (for, as and of learning).

As the gymnasium is often the classroom for H&PE, consider laminating the posters to affix to the gymnasium walls to use as visual aids with students. The posters can also be downloaded to various devices such as telephones and tablets for student use in all settings.

These posters may be used along with the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) Sample Unit Plans.
